The matter of the islands | A dialogue between Aeolian archaeological heritage and contemporary artists
The Matter of the Islands is a project dedicated to the Archaeological Park of the Aeolian Islands - Luigi Bernabò Brea Archaeological Museum. It proposes the archaeological, cultural, natural and relational Aeolian heritage as a matter of investigation for contemporary artists. Conceived and directed by Giulia Restifo, it is realized with the contribution of the Sicilian Region - Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity.
Island Matter, the new project of That's Contemporary, previews a research art residency that invites artists to interact with the territory and suggest other narrative possibilities between the present and the past.
The investigation in situ focuses on the prehistoric era of the Luigi Bernabò Brea Archaeological Museum collection and the Contrada Diana Archaeological Areas in Lipari and the Saline di Lingua on the island of Salina. Through a rich program of territorial exploration together with expert museum guides and community members, custodians of stories and traditions, the residency period is an opportunity for generative reflections on the context to emerge, the spirit of place and the subject matter of the islands, viz. Aeolian's enormous cultural, natural and human heritage.
Participating in the first residency are Rachele Maistrello and Virginia Zanetti, artists whose practice places an emphasis on the relationship between contemporary art and territory, with a special focus on the creative involvement of communities. The selection process was entrusted to an advisory committee formed by professionalsə accomunatə by extensive experience with the project themes. Along with Rosario Vilardo, Director of the Archaeological Park of the Aeolian Islands and Giulia Restifo, Project Designer, the committee consists of Gabi Scardi, Sabrina Drigo, Giusi Diana, Luigi Galimberti, and Jessica Tanghetti.
